After attending several professional development opportunities on environmental literacy during many summers, several of the teachers of FIS became motivated to educate the students about the future of their Earth.   The professional development education guided teachers to promote future stewards of the environment to sustain us, our families, and future generations.

By integrating environmental literacy in the science curriculum, students become more motivated to make a change and to be the change.  As the school began to see the heightened interest in the children, the teachers were motivated to practice what was being taught and make it a goal to earn Maryland Green School Certification.

This process has excited students immensely, as they now can "fix" the problems that they have been studying.  Making children part of the process of sustainability gives them a purpose and a sense of ownership  in the process.

Some of the activities students have been involved in, just this school year are as follows:
  • Visiting Wicomico County Landfill to see where waste goes.
  • Cleaning up the Salisbury City Park.
  • Inviting a guest from Assateague State Park to educate about our local waters.
  • Recycling in the classroom.
  • Using the school morning video announcements to share facts and tips on protecting the environment.
  • Visiting the Fruitland Water Treatment Plant to understand the process of treating water for human use.
  • Promoting waste reduction through "Waste-Free Lunch".
  • Holding an Energy Conservation Assembly with presentations by our community partner, Coptank Electric.
  • Creating classroom jobs to turn off lights and reduce water waste.
  • Promoting the 3 Rs and a healthy school life style through various clubs and events.
