After attending several professional development opportunities on environmental literacy during many summers, several of the teachers of FIS became motivated to educate the students about the future of their Earth. The professional development education guided teachers to promote future stewards of the environment to sustain us, our families, and future generations.
By integrating environmental literacy in the science curriculum, students become more motivated to make a change and to be the change. As the school began to see the heightened interest in the children, the teachers were motivated to practice what was being taught and make it a goal to earn Maryland Green School Certification and most recently working towards recertification. This process has excited students immensely, as they now can "fix" the problems that they have been studying. Making children part of the process of sustainability gives them a purpose and a sense of ownership in the process.
